2008 Dominican Republic Trip

On April 26, 2008, six members of NPC returned from an eight day Mission Trip to Santiago, Dominican Republic. The church of Brisas del Este, which another team from NPC helped build two years ago, is now thriving and well used. The church serves as a worship center, a school, and a community center. The church building is complete with the exception of a small kitchen/office space. On Sunday the team worshiped in the church. The service lasted more than 2 hours and of course was in Spanish. The electricity did go off during the service just to remind us that we were in the DR.

STEPS
One project the team took on was rebuilding a set of 65 stairs leading from the upper level to a lower level of the barrio. ( click here for more)

SHELVING FOR THE CHURCH
Ann and John took on another project, building shelves and installing cabinets in the kitchen/office space. They also added shelving for audio equipment within the church. ( click here for more)

MURAL
Judy and Kathie were busy drawing and painting a mural on the church wall. It is based on the scripture from John 15:5, “I am the vine, you are the branches. If you remain in me, and I in you, you will bear much fruit. Apart from me you can do nothing.” The women of the church enjoyed helping to paint brightly colored fruit on a tree representing Christ. COMMUNITY FOOD DISTRIBUTION
Another big project undertaken was a community food distribution. ( click here for more )

MEN’S FELLOWSHIP DINNER
In an effort to draw more men into the church, the team sponsored a men’s fellowship dinner. More than 50 men turned out for the event. ( click here for more )

AFTERNOON TEA
The women of the barrio were given a special treat, an afternoon tea. ( click here for more )

PROJECTS WITH CHILDREN
The team helped the children create framed pictures of themselves and held a “Children and Worship” program for them. ( click here for more )

It was a busy week. Besides reconnecting with the people, the project list for the week was lengthy. With God’s help and the help of the people of the church of Brisas, a lot was accomplished. The team returned tired, but happy that they had made a difference in the lives of many people in that community. Although only six made the trip and did the physical part of the work, they were an extension of NPC.
